well, they never made it clear how much money the crew was getting for the stunt, so there is no way to determine IF the crew needed the diamonds to help defray Terry's investment, but I'm sure the crew wouldn't mind having the stones for profit reasons.
But that doesn't explain why Terry just didn't ask for them up front if he wanted them so badly. The crew never stated: "OK, we are keeping the stones." The crew never said, "ok, we'll double your investment and we keep the diamonds."' That line would've set it all straight, but that was never spoken.
Had that been the reason, THEN, I could totally see Terry wanting to steal the diamonds, because the crew was relying on them to defray the cost of Terry's investment, thus giving Terry more reason to steal them, to fuck over the crew to satisfy some lingering anger from Ocean's 12.
But, none of this was really made clear in the film and the hole in the script is still there.
