No, you could always get home. Its no problem to leave. The point he is making is that once you are in you might as well stay, cause if you leave you may not get back in... Thats the 'revolving door' analogy.
Its kinda what happened to me. I was coming and going every 3 months for about 3 years, and it was getting increasingly difficult to re-enter each time. As my life within the the US developed and I started to put down roots, so the danger and resulting problems of us not being able to get back in if we left increased...
Hence why we eventually just overstayed... Had I been able to leave after 3 months stay in the UK for a few weeks and then just come back to my leased apartment (which was full of bought furniture etc) and my car etc, I doubt we would have ever overstayed.
EDITED TO CLARIFY that we were breaking no laws in the US, and my working online could have been done anywhere in the world, so no jobs were being taken from US citizens by me. Infact in my own little way, I contributed to the US economy and never took a penny from it in any shape or form. The only reason we were there was because at the time, it was the world capital of porn.
