It is pretty much an authoritarianism, if you ask me.
Putin has his own block of allies in power, mostly military and security forces, so he could keep the position even in the case of impeachment attempt and this block made politics in Russia a monopoly - there are only weak and stupid political parties left in the game, as anyone who could really do something are either dead or bribed.
But in non-political spheres of life there is enough freedom to live a normal life.
And yes, Putin is the only reason, why Russia is still in the news. He is a pretty strong, charismatic leader, who makes only few visible mistakes in his actions. Without him Russia would be just like Ukraine - poor country with absolutely no power, but with a huuuuge ambitions
