Here are some places where you can get land for free.
You are aware most of the US is "free" land settlements right?
The federal government can't technically give it away now but they really don't need to be the owners of so much land.. $50 an acre for a bunch or desert and rock sounds good to me. Who knows, someone might be more productive with it. I'm sure the states can buy it themselves.
