I can't read his weird mind, but I guess he's using that conflict like a trading card in hope to lift the sanctions from his friends oligarchs. The sanctions were imposed after the annexation of Krimea which was really important to Russia. That was not a game and that's why Krimea was annexed so fast and easily. But that's just IMHO. I really don't know what's going on in his mind...

This is not so easy question as you may thing. Many Russians have relatives in the Ukraine and vice versa. In fact we are the people of the same ethnicity (all Ukrainians are ethnic Russians). The normal sane people in the both countries still love each other and have no hate. They hate the governments instead. But here and there is a huge bunch of brainwashed idiots who is used to watch the federal propaganda on TV.
Russian and Ukrainians propaganda is the same shit but with just a different vector. The Ukrainian propaganda says that Russians are going to invade them (what for, I have no idea). The Russian propaganda says that the Ukrainian Nazi took power over the country and they have to be stopped. Both propaganda machines lie of course and normal people understand it very well. But there is a serious % of morons in every society who can be easily brainwashed...
