this is not completely true - it is not ONLY the pipline what would have to go through syria:

Syria has petroleum and natural gas resources and encourages them. According to experts, the developed oil reserves amount to about 2.5 billion barrels.

As far as the EU embargo against Assad in mid-2011, 90 percent of the Syrian oil exports went to Europe. Until 2009, Syria was the most important oil supplier in Germany in the Middle East, ahead of Saudi Arabia. Syria has so far maintained its own natural gas in its own country.

But at the end of 2012 the Norwegian company ANCIS has now found 14 more productive oil and natural gas deposits in only 250 meters of test drillings off the Syrian Mediterranean coast. With the discovered natural gas, it would be encouraged, could Syria to the world-wide fourth place of all natural gas exporters
