ugh.. first off, gambling has NOTHING to do with luck, there is skill involved and just pure chance.. depending on what your playing..

Let me answer your senerio with one of my own.
John works hard at work, best worker they have ever seen, never late, completes jobs quickly and thourough
Mike works kinda hard, usually on time, completes jobs, but not as good as John, But he is also good friends with the boss, therefore he gets the job..
This has nothing to do with luck, its all about playing the system.. and making your own luck.. or "paving your own path" as they say
