Reading that Variety story...the one thing that isn't being talked about here is Fox News is still number one in total viewers.
"Fox News finished first in total viewers with 1.5 million and second in the demo with 321,000. MSNBC was second in total viewers with 1.2 million total viewers and third in the demo with 281,000. CNN finished third in total viewers with 1.05 million but first in the demo with 353,000."

"demo" is the demographic of adults aged 25 to 54 years old.
Which shows what has always been true about most people of working age...they don't watch the news on television. They come home from work and just want to relax a bit.

But for the ones that do...CNN is number one. And yet still in last place among total viewers.

Anyway, MSNBC is still in second place. These ratings definitely reflect the takedown of O'Reilly by the New York Times starting a boycott on his advertisers.

Word today is that Sean Hannity is next on the "hit list" to silence Fox opinion show hosts. Lot of money at stake. MSNBC is reaping the rewards of O'Reilly going down. Maybe they will profit again if they can pressure Hannity's sponsors next.

Silencing dissenting opinion...very "liberal" thing in 2017?
No.
It's all about power and greed. Fox News has the power and greed. MSNBC wants it back. lol
