It was likely just a personal issue.
Kid gets radicalized, becomes disillusioned with some people, and then radicalizes in a different direction to spite them. When the Alt-Right is sufficiently big, it can hopefully attract some counselors and psychologists. Many people join the Alt-Right for reasons related to mental health, so there's definitely a space for mental health experts to help keep people on board
