Thailand is cheap, could be also expensive if you want...
I may understand though your love for Europe, as similar culture, working infrastrcuture (in Italy ? well....ha ha ha ) etc...but Thailand has its charm too...
I only have good memories of Thailand and people there were truly friendly, honest and nice :-)
just avoid tourist traps in Thai and you will be fine.
