You say cops and construction workers etc. help keep out country running as if teachers don't. Do you really not think teachers play a valuable role in our society?
I believe conservatives have no real interest in changing the education system to reflect their belief system because it is an easy tool that they can use to wage the culture war and make their base happy. It's easy to say, "If you don't vote for us, evil liberals will run the schools and they will turn your kids into Muslims and force them to have abortions."
Liberals have their culture war subjects as well, but they don't play the game nearly as well as conservatives. If conservatives really wanted to fix the educational system in this country they could. Clearly, they don't.
