I dunno if it as 80's or 90s but Sega made a sit down racing game that could be linked to other machines so you could race AI and real people.

It was called Indy 500, was likely one of the most realistic driving games when it came to input/traction/shifting/breaking ect.

You could not beat the AI using auto trans and if you did not properly down shift while breaking, you couldn't win much less if you crashed or bumped a wall, you lost.

I spent so many quarters on that game, it actually improved my real life racing at the time. I raced shifter karts at the time and that game was almost like driving one.
