This has CIA written all over it and I'm not a conspiracy nut like Wehateporn.
There is video of him being returned to the US in a state of coma, so it's not that much of a reach to assume the likelihood of him being brain dead at that point. North Korea most likely didn't want his death on their soil once he went into a coma from the poor living conditions, malnutrition and disease of the slave labor camp he was in. So they agreed to release him and send him back home so he would die in the US.
