What you call "doing fine" is nowhere near his star power when he was peaking. He hasn't be that active since 2013 and then he was in one kind of big movie called Fury in 2014. Being in a softcore porn Lars Von Trier movie/experiment is not Transformers. And it's not that I think an actor's success is based on the size of the movies he does, but we can honestly say his career is on a bigtime downward trend.
Most actors who stick around for a long time maybe were huge once, but they find a niche they're good at and keep working steadily. Shia just looks like too much of a tool to figure out how to do that without shooting himself in the foot over and over. It's one of those "own worst enemy" situations but I do think he's a good actor and I like him in Charlie Countryman.
