Just as an anecdote I for one always donate to beggars that claim to be Vets. I got semi acquainted with one as I frequently saw him at the same spot day after day and often gave him money. I was in a bar one day and he came walking into the bar. I offered to buy him a drink but he instead offered to buy me one. We ended up having several drinks together and he let me in on a little secret. He was a veteran alright, but was retired from the military and got a healthy retirement check each month and he was not homeless as the sign said that he held up in his hands when he was out begging. He actually had a small but nice apartment in a relatively nice part of town. Not everything is always the way they appear to be.
