It's a split (fork), it's not some new alt coin.

The core developers and big miners can't agree on how Bitcoin should be updated (some want different changes to the core than others) so they go their separate ways.

A split also happened to Ethereum last year due to disagreements, that's why you now have Ethereum and Ethereum Classic.

After a split the value of each of them is solely decided by the market based on trades.

Let's say you have stock in a company with 2 owners, the owners can't agree on something and they decide to split up in 2 separate companies and split the stock. You now own stock in both, and both have value. But the value depends on the market, each will be worth only what the market deems each is worth, which is solely based on trades.
