I had a Russian Blue whom I could leave in the bathroom sink, sitting in warm water.
Regarding cats. To get them accustomed to water it's pretty easy. When they are kittens, fill a bathtub with a bit of water, and drop one or two live gold fish in to swim around. Kittens will be drawn to the fish, and it will be easier to place them into the water itself.
