What sources told you so? Russia really has a lot of contractors (and w/o quotes) there, but speaking about 100's of dead is a bullshit of course and surely their families know where exactly their members were killed. That's not some kind of a covert op. War in Syria is a legal mission (the Russian army was officially invited by the government) and it's well covered in the Russian news. To say better it's always a news #1 on TV with live reports from the battle field etc. There is no need to hide anything about it. It's not a war on the Ukraine.
One more thing about contractors. There is no need to use a draft army there and there is no secret on who fights there. All those guys are professionals (they are get paid for their job) and they don't even hide their faces and names (no reason for that):
