It actually started with lightbulbs in the 1930s. All the big companies got together and agreed no lightbulb would last more than 1000 hours.
In one instance it was found that a chip inside a desktop printer was designed to send an error messge after so many prints. This hacker wrote some code and the guy in the documentary downloaded the code, installed it on the printer, and was able to print again.

HP was sued because their printer software "expired" perfectly good ink cartridges so consumers would buy more ink from them.
Now HP is being sued again for giving a ?preset failure date for non-HP ink cartridges.? Planned obsolescence. fucking scumbags.
