Solar Flares, also called CME's, contain really strong charged particles. When they strike atoms in the atmosphere, they eject electrons, and when this happens we see light. Particularly, the Aurora Borealis.

Sometimes this can lots of radio static in the AM band, and even power blackouts. There was a big power blackout on the east coast in 1989 caused by this.
