I remember when I was in high school in the 1980's there was a doomsday theory going around that got so out of control at my school the school actually held an assembly and sent notices home with the kids so the parents could explain that the world wasn't ending.
On the day it was supposed to happen, about a third of the students didn't show up for school. It was pretty wild.
