I upgraded my old 2009 iMac by replacing the original HD with an SSD Drive and I was stunned at the speed improvement. If you're using a mechanical hard disk still, even a 7200 rpm one, swap it out for an SSD drive. It's the best upgrade you can possibly do.

First I'm going to take your advice and pick up an SSD Drive. I'm doing a lot of upsampling work at this moment and that's not only labour intensive but also really hard to render.
As for the operating system,
Well I'm never going to upgrade to windows 10 and instead I'm going to switch over to Ubuntu when it's time. I just can't support this over-priced bullshit that both Microsoft and Apple push.
