A huge part of the problem was how the trump administration handled this from the start. Instead of handling it properly and saying "Wow, this could be a huge problem for us" they blew it off and now it's become a full investigation. Their complete lack of experience in the political arena ended up with this massive investigation, allowing them to look at everything they've done in the past decade....
