The article didn't say where he got the assault rifle from. If he didn't buy it himself, he bought it from a friend, or perhaps stole it from a friend or a friend's parents but... If we stopped selling assault rifles and banned them, he wouldn't have been able to buy one, borrow one from his friend, or steal one from someone he knew. Instead, his only option would have been to drive or fly half way across the country, somehow get in contact with someone who smuggles assault rifles, give him and the money and hope he doesn't get ripped off, and then drive back to do his mass shooting....

Do you see the difference? Currently it's very easy for a nineteen year old kid to get an assault rifle, but if you remove assault rifles from society it would be very difficult for him to get.

The reality is we allow ANYONE to buy assault rifles with very little restrictions. Nearly anyone can get their hands on them.
Are you saying ban the future manufacture and sale of assault rifles as well as confiscate all existing assault rifles ?

No one knows who owns assault rifles. And even if you did, confiscating the existing assault rifles will be met with a lot of resistance and possibly armed conflict. More people will die trying to take them away then people now die by being shot with them. That could begin a civil war.

If you dont get rid of all of the existing assault rifles nothing will change... they will still be readily available to those that want them for an unlimited amount of time. Guns arent iPhones they dont have planned obsolesce.

it is an impossible situation.

Prohibition just simply doesnt work.
