If the motive isn't obvious, I always suspect mental illness.
The behavior of the mentally ill is the least predictable, and therefore the least comprehensible to the most logical, rational people. The rational are supposed to be right, and they end up wrong.
(edit: by "least predictable", I don't mean "totally spontaneous without any planning")
