Here is my take on this....

I am of course a (former) US Marine, and very proudly so. I served during the late 1980s. "Women Marines" (called WMs back then) were sort of a joke. We had a few; They were always in Motor Transport, Supply, or Admin. We had one who worked in the armory, a Lance Corporal, and frankly she had her choice of young Marines to choose from. My opinion of Woman Marines was, well, "less than excellent". With that said, in the past four years, I became friends with our local Marine recruiter. The first time I met him he introduced me to a young woman Marine, right out of boot camp, and I was mildly impressed. She went from being a high school cheerleader to having an six pack and being a hard charging US Marine. She wasn't in supply or admin; She was on a front line combat unit similar to what I did in the Marines. She was impressive.

I don't care what anyone's gender is, or sexual orientation is, or if they are transgendered or whatever. If they can pick up a rifle and fire it, they can serve in our military.
