I'd say do whatever costs less. If it's execution, then do that. If rotting in a cell is cheaper, then do that.
Even cheaper would be a .22 caliber bullet that costs few cents, or a carefully placed knight stick swing. I love that we live in a country where even when we know for sure that someone should be put down, there's checks and balances to keep things from running totally amok. The cost is not being able to dispose of this guy inexpensively in a just a few seconds.
