I produce content as well. I see both sides.
Affiliates, in this day and age should be 20-30% of your sales. Owners should be able to get their own sales. Plenty of deals to be made directly. Affiliates bring you sales you would not/may not get otherwise. Most likely.
Affiliates have domain, design, web hosting costs. And lots of time spent making those sales happen.
