When Core finally figures out Lightning there's going to be a whole new wave of confusion and n00bery as people try to figure out how to implement it. And if it bombs (or is perpetual vapourware) it could have a serious effect on the value of BTC.
There's always the possibility of another coin taking over if the Core team dicks us around for much longer...
