Yes, there is a reason why many bobsledders are ex track athletes or football players. A quick start can be the difference maker.
As for curling the sweeping portion can get fairly intense - they sometimes have to push very hard. But still probably not intense enough to require doping. Maybe the doping was for mental acuity or stimulation or something.
