I read that earlier in the week and wondered at the legality of being paid to publish something and refusing on moral grounds. It was on Tuesday I think and commenters wrote mostly against this guy's actions. You pay for an obituary and lengthy ones cost a lot. For my father they charged $175 for six paragraphs (he belonged to many organizations and was involving in semi-pro sports) and I argued with my mom about it. If it costs $175 for a quarter-page ad, then we want equivalent space for his obituary.
If the family wants his son and husband listed, then do so. Discrimination might be normal in some areas but it's not right.
My obituary will mention I owned my own business, published a magazine and had many websites, but the topic of the subject matter won't be listed. But that's MY choice, not that of a publisher of a local newspaper.
