Perhaps, but there is another reason: Principal, and warnings to others to protect their property.
I could buy the domain back from him at his new price of $1500, but posting about it and warning others has more value I think.

The domain was on a server that was running a few small programs and housekeeping scripts. When the domain disappeared things kept running because it just fell back to the IP address instead. We weren't promoting it - it was just up as a service to us.
