PDC is saver than some USA cities and schools. If you keep away from drugs, most will be fine. Altough they put a bomb on the ferry to cozumel some weeks ago. Could be the competition. And you must choose your neighbourhood wisely, look where the other Gringo's are staying. There are living thousands of foreigners in Playa del Carmen permanently and a lot have a business there. During high season, december - april, there are tens of Thousand people from Canada, USA and Europe that are looking for a warmer climate.
I stayed 3 months in PDC and a friend of mine just returned. Nothing about unsafety. But it can Always change when a gang war starts.
I am in Thailand. Here you don't see much hard crime. But Thailand is the country with the most (deadly) motorbike accidents. Every time when it rains on the Island i could see a lot of people in bandages the next day. I think more tourist in Thailand get killed by motobikes than by crime in PDC. I was on Koh Samui last month and there a Thai jetski businessman was shot on the most popular beach by a thai competitor.
You never know what happens. In the small city in Holland where i lived the neighbour got shot in his car in front of the apartments. Criminal payback.
