As about the other reasons of death. The actual murder rate in Moscow (the officially most criminal city in Russia) is not sufficiently higher than in London end even less than in NYC.

You may say that Russians die because they drink a lot? Believe me that Brits drink much more (don't trust to wikipedia). You guys drink like horses. The problem is that poor Russians (especially in villages) drink poison.

A methanol tank has crashed in some Russian village. One guy has tested it and died. The other one looked at him and tested it too. When a 3rd guy looked at two dead bodies, he cried "God, help me to survive" and drunk it as well... From one hand, it's just an anecdote, but not so... There was at least one real story when almost a whole village has died of methanol. And like in that anecdote the people knew that others die of it, buy they still hoped they will survive and tasted it, because it was free!
