Airborne drones work due to the fact they are airborne and have very long range ability to be remote controlled. Ground units can't do that due to things like trees building and so on drastically lowering the range of the remote control unit.

The only way you could even make something like that work it via satellite and the built in lag to a system like that would be like playing counter strike on a 56k modem..
