This is where coal goes.
74% of the steel produced today uses coal. Metallurgical coal – or coking coal – is a vital ingredient in the steel making process. ... Steel is an alloy based primarily on iron. As iron occurs only as iron oxides in the earth's crust, the ores must be converted, or 'reduced', using carbon.
In 2014, the share of world energy consumption for electricity generation by source was coal at 40.8%, natural gas at 21.6%, nuclear at 10.6%, hydro at 16.4%, other sources (solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, etc.) at 6.3% and oil at 4.3%. Coal and natural gas were the most used energy fuels for generating electricity.
I live in Vancouver and we have two coal ports. All the coal goes to China. One port loaded
1 million tons in the month of December for export. They are doubling their capacity as we speak for next year.
Coal will be around a long time.
