People do so much hard work today and almost don't walk at they need very little food. It's really easy to cross your calorie intake for 1.000 calories (or more per day). Every 7.000 calories you eat more than you need will result in you getting an extra 1kg of body weight. It's as simple as that.
Limit the calorie intake, choose your food smarter, try to prepare most of your food, have a balanced diet and make that your lifestyle and you'll do just fine. It's really no that hard. I've lost 30 kilos and I'm on ideal BMI for 3 years now without any problems.
