Trump has no political or diplomatic experience, no ambassador to South Korea, and a gutted US State Department.
Trump seems to think of things in very simple terms, thinking he will just be able to walk in and have a fireside chat and fix things over a cup of tea or some Kentucky Fried Chicken. He doesn't seem to understand that in order to get to that point hundreds of people on both sides need to make a lot of agreements in advance. I remember when Kennedy was meeting with Khrushchev at the Vienna summit the Russians wanted Kennedy to wear a hat because they didn't want Khrushchev to "look bad' because he was wearing a hat (because it was so damn cold out).
It's complicated. Trump had no idea it was this complicated.
