The map of the Ukrainian Soviet Republic above explains just everything (Lenin, Stalin and Khrushchev have created the Ukraine as we know it). The Ukraine has always been a part of the Russian Empire and after that is was a part of the USSR (that's why the Ukraine means "outskirts" in Russian). It's got the independence only in 1991 when the USSR has collapsed.
