I have a friend of mine who couldn't find a decent job to save his life. Money was so tight for them. He started driving, entry level position job was $80k with no experience other than truck driving school. A few years later he is making almost twice that, and a company in Texas paid for him to move out there...

I have two friends who are truckers. It’s a cut throat job and it’s being taken over by people who will work cheaper. Self driving trucks are a long time away. You’d see self driving trains first (which exist) but not on class I railroads.
Also, regulation and fuel prices hurt.
