The owner is a very intelligent man, but is "old" school. He takes the approach, "if it ain't completely broken, no reason to fix it".
For those of you on C4S, I suggest you create multiple smart surveys of specific issues you have, and improvements you would like to see implemented. Run those surveys on multiple webmaster forums like this one. When the survey period is closed, send him the results, including links to back it up.
