I don't know about Tumblr, but Reddit can be tough. It depends on what you are promoting and how you do so. For example, you could make your own subreddit that features your content and post pictures and GIFS in it then you can try to cross post from time to time promoting that subreddit. You can try putting up watermarked pics or linking to pics/galleries in other areas of the site, but many of the admins are very strict and will ban you if they even suspect you are spamming.
If you have niche specific content, make a subreddit about that type of content ( I.E. foot fetish, big tits, big asses, deepthroats etc.) and see if you can attract fans to the subreddit. Watermark your content and make sure your profile is filled out. the hope is that fans will subscribe to the subreddit and eventually visit your site(s).
