Your suggestion runs as follows:

You are a married cheater and your wife has hired a private investigator to look into your past comings and goings.

You know the private investigator has contacted your girlfriends and is talking to them.

So, rather than contact the girls themselves in secret and tell them "Hey, don't tell him anything and I'll make sure good things come your way" - which seems like a MORE logical strategy than yours, and what any sane person would do - instead, you take out an ad in the paper with pictures of the diamond ring you just bought for someone else's girlfriend because you thought their boyfriend treated them unfairly - and hope that your girlfriends understand the message. And that your wife thinks that's perfectly normal as well.

Like I said - it makes sense to you.
