That is a complex question. That said, I also believe with every fiber of my being that hte division of left/right is one of humanities greatest evolutionary achievements. Through we don't realize it, every society is similarly ordered. Much of Europe is skewed so far to the left due to 2 World Wars where conservatives are sooner to recognize the threat and quicker to sign up to fight and thus die to challenge the threat. It's never the conservative voice saying "wait, its not big deal that germany is arming itself again against all agreements" and its always the liberal voice saying "hey war-monger, leave them alone"
Why is it important?
The Team of Rivals
The best solutions always come from intense argument. In other words, when you have something like a cult where no one is raising their hand to ask "does it make sense to kill ourselves to be taken off the planet in the spaceship hiding in the tail of the Hale Bop Comet" - everyone dies.
How do you get that intense argument to best enhance our survival as an individual, then as a group and then as a species?
People have to see things differently AND be blind to the other's way of seeing things. Afterall, quick agreement and a poor debate leads to a bad answer which reduces the probability of survival of the group and then as such, the individual.
There is bad news for Liberals. They got the bad end of the deal in that their ability to understand the other side is far more diminished than that of the other. When it comes to the various types of moral reasoning, they have a couple types of moral issues that are strongly over exaggerated and conflated and are blind to the rest. Jonathan Haidt has done 100s of 1000s of surveys across the globe to show the same pattern in culture after culture.
The upside to us all is in this perceptual discrepancy is that this is where the fire and fury come from in debates. "You're racist", "you're xenophobic", "you're hateful" etc etc etc etc. This is not due to mean personalities, this is due to the inability for example to appropriately weight all aspects of an issue. In other words a liberal gives a disproportionate amount of weight to "we need to protect them, we need to help them, we need to care for them" and no weight at all to the costs. This is seen in this conversation or in social problems in general. What happens then? When you can't percieve the costs all you can perceive is objection to "helping", "caring" etc when someone is really just asking "how do we pay for this".
Why Conservatives/Liberals see issues differently is a long discussion in moral reasoning and the difference between your brains processing of reason and moral questions.
But surely you've noticed "I care, you don't" is a constant feature of the Liberal world view. Protecting others is processed as a moral issue with reason coming second.
In the last two decades, we've done something interesting as a society thats sent things spinning off the rails.
First...
We became politically correct. We decided you can't call a dumb person dumb, a fat person fat, an annoying person annoying etc. We no longer tell parents to shut their kids up and be respectful of others. In fact, we've emboldened the worst of humanity to act horribly and feel entitled to do so.
Then....
Those very people started getting participation trophies and were told at every turn that they were special. So we normalized the behaviors of horrible people... then told them they were special and entitled.
Then....
With no societal restraints and being told they were "special" a new behavior popped up. A totally new behavior.
That is the unchallenged quest for unearned status.
You see, your brain doesn't try to be honest, it tries to be perceived as honest. Individual reputation plays a stronger role in group survival than honestly.
Self entitled liberals, empowered and emboldened by a life of participation trophies learned that now they can claim to be offended to gain status within the group. They also know that unlike 2 decades ago you can't just tell them to shut the fuck up while pointing out the stupidity of their claims.
In that vacuum, knowing they can't be criticized, they learned another powerful lesson. That is that they can just call you racist or hateful for honest criticism and you shut up. Why? Reputation. You don't want to be called racist. You can't afford to be perceived as being a racist, so words like that became powerful tools to shut down any reasonable discourse.
But they didn't stop there....
knowing they can't be effectively criticized, and that they have free reign to call you racist and hateful no matter what you say to shut down any hope of well reasoned debate.... they figured out a new way to gain status.
You become a victim.... un-earned status
Why work hard to achieve? The participation trophy generation learned a shortcut to getting unearned status and unearned respect from peers.
You get offended. You become the victim of imagined hate. You standup for imagined victims of imagined crimes. You go to Ferguson to protest a thugs botched attempt to kill a cop after a robbery. You conveniently forget about a bunch of dipshits destroying a city as a result. You proclaim allegiance to groups like BLM which chant to kill cops or that recite blatant lies because the lie is a great narrative to illustrate an injustice taht you need to be seen fighting against. You never stop letting the world know "you care". You never stop announcing to the world that you're fighting for whats right. You never stop announcing to your peers that you fight for the little guy and that "the other guys" are hateful and mean, therefore you are a champion in an epic struggle.... and its all for status from peers.
This is what the electorate is pushing back against right now. We've allowed this pendulum to swing much too far. The majority of voters are tired of being called racist or hateful and mean and really just want a government to focus on jobs, immigration, economy, trade and so on. Clearly, as you can see... the left has no ability to understand all of this and all they can talk about is hating Trump, hating republicans and hating everyone who disagrees with them... and even worse, root for failure to be proven correct.- even when it comes at the clear expense of all those who they never stop telling you that they care about. Ironically they are also doing so while believing themselves to be on the high moral ground while acting in a hateful and abhorrent manner.
