Here's a simple solution.
If a family comes across the border illegally, they are taken into custody, finger printed, and put into the system and detained. After the legal process is done, they will be deported.
I understand the argument that this will not stop them from trying it again and again, but to me, an improved immigration system and policy could help reduce those numbers greatly. I also wouldn't be opposed to some kind of three strikes system. There are plenty of ways to handle this is a reasonable and humane way. What Trump is doing is trying to make the situation as ugly for those illegals as possible so they won't be tempted to try it again. To me, using kids to threaten adults or prove a point is pretty cowardly.
