It's very strange how airlines work
. When i first came to the USA i booked a flight to Penang, Malaysia. Now from London this flight would normally take around 10-12 hours with a short stop over in Jakarta to switch to a smaller plane.
From San Diego it took 37 hours with like 5 stops. Worst flying experience ever !!!!
