Religious cults have to make anything fun a sin in order to control people. It's how they pushed marriage, family units and settling down so the powers in charge could tax you and build armies.. Started way back with Christianity.. Granted it's also why Europe out paced the rest of the world early on, due to control over the masses. That control created a large amount of power which was able to be used to build control over more places..
