the power of a country is not measured in the prosperity of the people.
especially not when you look from outside and try to compare it to your own country.

best example is china.
in compare to us most of them are still poor. but in their own view many things have changed in the past 10 or 15 years.

russia is about the same.
try to live in moscow with an average european income - you will not afford to pay 5000 dollar rent for a 2 bedroom condo.
on the other hand you can still survive with 200 dollar when you live in in a village in the taiga.
it is really hard to compare that because in our countries we donīt have that in this kind of monster differences. you really canīt say when someone is poor or rich in russia.

btw. the revolution have already shown that these people can stand up if it is going to be too much. and whatever happend since than it seems to be better as everything they had under the czar.

if you read a bit about the russian history you will understand that they never had it easy
and they got blocked to grow to be the power they could be all the time.
and yes they are imperialistic - is the west not the same?

it's all about alliances against other alliances, whether military or economic.
