John Edwards used his own money to pay to keep his mistress quiet while he was running for President and when he got caught he ended up charged with five felonies because he didn't report it correctly. The only reason he didn't go to jail was because he was able to take the stand and convince the jury that he paid her to save his marriage not his campaign. Trump likely won't be able to make that same argument.
