They were never serious anyway. It was political to take Edwards out of the race. Of course what he did to his dying wife made him a hated man anyway so it really didn't matter.

They dropped the charges after the trial. Edwards went to trial and the case went to the jury. He was found not guilty of one count and there was a mistrial declared on the other counts. The government then dropped those counts instead of trying the case again.
As for serious, had he been found guilty he could have gone to jail for 30 years. That sounds pretty serious to me.
